happy #1

Charles Dickens. Thanks, Chuck, for writing really long books. I’m four chapters in on Nicholas Nickelby.

The antithesis to my happiness is that I didn’t keep a comprehensive list of all the books I read this year. I know I read quite a few (that being relative, of course) but I can’t do an instant recall without a list. The ones that stick out are: Little Children, The Good Wife, Veronica, Saturday, & Gilead.  I think there were a couple of throw-away Elizabeth Bergs. Oh, Elizabeth Costello by Coetzee, which I didn’t love. The History of Love was good. Um. 2007, I’m keeping a list.

But just think, without a list, you most likely read so many dozens of wonderful books, too many to even keep track of. With a list you read exactly 12 books. Or 15, or 2. Maybe that’s why I don’t step on the scale anymore. On fat grumpy days I can approach 200 and on that one day a cycle when my stomach flattens, I can weigh a measly 120.

What if you kept a list and then looked back and couldn’t remember half the books on it? Which is why it’s better to just create a list out of thin air and cow pies. I wish I’d kept a list of those lists…

i read a lot of good books for me and some and some not so good books that i tried to read and i had to read many books i hope to never think of again for grad school. however, i make it a point to keep all my school books as you never know when you might need one to prop up the sofa or to use as a weapon. I’ve never been good at keeping list of what i’ve read, but i keep a list of what i want to buy to read.

You’re all right. I shouldn’t spend too much time thinking about the past. It was just a thing I started in 1998 and for whatever reason, it made me happy. This year was sort of a mess and I stopped doing a lot of things I like. That’s what resolutions are for.

I thought it was rather silly to keep track of what I had read, but I did it anyway, and have a record going back to around 1992. Then I read The Little Guide to the Well Read Life, by Steve Leveen. Oddly, it’s a book about reading. I enjoyed it immensely, and get a lot more satisfaction these days from my lists of books I’ve read, books waiting to be read, and books I want to acquire.

I hate when Tree goes days and days without a post.
